my students are unbelievably good at chess

Here's D'Andrea in ceramics class after another student put a clay-encrusted hand on the back of his head.

  1. Hi Elizabeth,
Just curious, how many of your previous students (either in high school or left 318) are still playing, and what are their ratings? Do they still get an opportunity for coaching in their high schools?
    Thanks!

  2. How are you getting such good results? Any books or techniques particularly useful? And if your students study on the computer a lot (say, reading Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual in CB format) does this have any negative effects on their OTB play? In any case, that's an impressive list!

  3. thanks!
Marc, some still play, but I don't know how to count how many. The truth is, very few people play chess anyway. In New York, how many active tournament players are there? 100? 200? not more than that....
Chess in the schools has an alumni program, so some join that. My top students who are still involved in chess: Rochelle Ballantyne, Darrian Robinson, Oscar Santana, Angel Lopez, Shawn Martinez ...

How do I get good result? Mostly lots of time... most of the kids play some chess every day. I really think the sheer number of hours is key. Also, I try to work hard. And Coakley's books are great.

  4. Hi Elizabeth,

I've always wondered whether you or your school have actually seen the positive impact of chess on students' academic performance? How would you describe the non-chess impact of your work?

  5. Elizabeth,

It would be neat to see you dance with GM Lenderman. I can not get enough of his dances, they rock!

  6. Hi Elizabeth,
At least five students still involved and loving the game is fantastic. If NYC has a max of 200 active players, that's 2.5% just from 318.
    Best,
    -Marc-
