Some USCL gossip for you: I hear that Queens will be changing its name next year from the Queens Pioneers to the Queens Entourage.

intermittent thoughts on my life and work as the chess coach at IS 318, a public middle school in Brooklyn

Good lord, I hope Perez Hilton doesn't find out about this.
Maybe they can get Jodi Jett to do a version of Bedford Avenue for Queens Boulevard. :-)
Shaq's not afraid of the Queens Entourage.
Who's going to be Turtle?

There are no mountains on Queens Boulevard. That must be Hillside Ave.
The name change would be an improvement, though I think they could do better still.
On second thought I take it back. Queens Entourage would be a pretty good name, I think. How would it graphicly, in the logo? A royal crest of some kind?
This is the awesomest blog ever. Between The Office, Entourage, and chess, Elizabeth has covered all the necessities of life. (Well, maybe you could riff on Big Love, too, like if there's a USCL game with three or more queens on the board.)
This blog is supposed provide gossip of the USCL and its a bit lacking. The blog aint bad but c'mon where is the gossip on USCL players for example no coverage of Pruess and Krush rumored relationship and no coverage of various feuds between teams and players... C'mon Liz get on top of it.
I understand your disappointment. In fact, I share it.
I will try to defend myself. First of all, I was not the one who raised your expectations to a fever pitch by choosing the highly provocative name "USCL news and gossip." Nor did I locate it at lizzyknowsall.blogspot.
(Greg did! I think he would very much like to hear *all* your complaints and suggestions and bits of gossip: email him at admin@uschessleague.com. He also really like getting forwarded "funny" messages and spam.)
Secondly, I try very hard to get my interview subjects to talk trash, and occasionally succeed. I mean, reread the Shabalov interview. Do you realize he does not say a *single* serious or true thing? It's a masterpiece by a great, great artist.
Thirdly, my photos are great and kinda gossipy in themselves. Mostly because it's disturbingly unusual to see photos of chessplayers either looking at a camera or smiling.
Finally, joking aside, let's agree that people's private lives are their own business. There's some weird, trippy conflux of factors in the chess world, maybe: (?) the lack of women (over 18), the heavy internetness of chess, the imitation of a celebrity culture, the existance of a subculture-unique conversational genre-- the superficial, 3-minute opponent-is-thinking exchange, the fact that tournaments are held in hotels, I don't know what exactly, but it all adds up to a ridiculous, ridiculous amount of gossip.
And gossip = incredibly terrible karma, so I'm going to try to stick to the silly / ridiculous.
Along those lines, I was talking to a friend of mine (who's a strong and active chess player) and he was explaining that he doesn't usually read my blog (although his non-chessplaying brother does?!) because "every post except the chess ones are ridiculous." This made me very confused, internally. Somehow it's like I'm always completely joking, but I never really don't mean it.
Sorry for the self-obsessed comment.
"Conflux": good word. Thanks.
