It's finally here: the computer program that knows everything. You ask it any question and, instead of searching the internet for the answer, it figures it out. try here

It's inventor and namesake, Stephen Wolfram, "raised eyebrows when he proposed, in a self-published tome in 2002, that the entire universe is but a giant calculator that has been running for billions of years."

And for your viewing amusement: a catalog of galaxies!

It's impressive in it's own way, but it still has a very long way to go. In fact, I think the approach they are taking will likely never work in the manner some imagine it will.

I do appreciate that they take and utilize suggestions.... Ask wolframalpha, "what is best in life?" or "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll?" or "how much wood could a woodchuck chuck?" and it already knows the answers to these critical questions.

Wolfram Alpha does not, however, know the answer to the question, "Who is the man who would risk his neck for his brother man?"

People like being the first poster to respond to a blog so much that they don't care whether they actually say anything & as you can see, half the time they're not even the first. It's all over YouTube, but it probably predates that.

This article is suggestive of the limits of WolframAlpha & has some chess content, too:
