in your face, Boston

Greg and Susan tried to go to Boston this weekend, but a suicide on the train tracks (unforeseen, the conductor kept stressing), followed by a malfunctioning engine on the replacement train convinced them that Boston was not in the cards.

Instead they came to visit me!

Greg shows me (us, readers!) a copy of a picture he bought at a street fair near Washington Square Park. It is the most colorful picture I have ever seen.

Actually, I only saw Greg for half an hour, because Rochelle, Brittanie, Talitha, Jiejing, Mitasha and I are playing in the NY State Women's Championship at the Marshall. We have 2, 1, 0.5, 1.5, 1, and 2, respectively. Rochelle and I are the top two seeds and the only ones with two, so she has white against me tomorrow.

Mitasha and Brittanie

Talitha and Jiejing

by the way, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is my favorite movie.

I'd live in any world in which the skyscraper towers are all giant crayons.

The problem with being a top seed is that then a win is not an upset.

But the good thing about being a top seed is that if you win, you prove your seeding was well-deserved. How many times in life do you get such a clear-cut chance at self-validation?

So we've established that Greg & Susan would rather spend half an hour with you than a train
wreck
/suicide. High praise indeed! It seems the incident happened in New Jersey on a train traveling from Washington, DC to Boston. Now exactly how does this justify yet another "in your face,
Boston"
flare up?

Actually it's no wonder Greg is inexorably drawn to this picture. It contains all the elements needed to document his weekend jaunt: colorful fruits on the far right, (not to mention: fruit-A, fruit-B & fruit-C) enormous phallic crayons overlooking a quiet village, comfortable outdoor furniture strategically positioned for an optimal view of the steaming train driving over a cliff as it morphs from brilliant primary colors to strict black & white simulating the suicidal spiral of a stopover in Brooklyn, a true work of art!

(Can't think of anything to say that won't sound too flippant re: the suicide, rare for me.)

You all go on hating us... that just means you're jealous that we're so much better than you. :)

I know this sounds crazy, but . . . the president of the United States does not control gas prices.

Wouldn't an IM prefer black and white? Or does everything not necessarily have to be black and white in the life of a gifted chess player?

I'm not sure why, but somehow ATH2044's overload of links in most of his/her comments is mildly annoying.

Your girls rock! What an impressive performance put in by them, especially Jie. I haven't had a chance to go over the games, but I hope to get some of them up on my blog this week. I'm sure your analysis will be better then mine.

Congratulations on your tournament win.

Usually I link things for humorous &/or informational value, no annoyance intended. I agree that my 5:09 post was overloaded, but I was in a hurry, so I posted my first draft without doing any rereading.

I agree with Polly that the girls put on an impressive performance & of course congrats to Elizabeth on the win.

I also think Elizabeth looks fantastic in this picture despite the photographer's (Polly?) breaking one of the most basic rules of photographic composition by having the lamp growing/glowing out of her head. It kind of resembles an illuminated crown while adding soft highlights to the rest of the group even though it most likely wasn't planned that way. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the games as well.

ATH2044: LOL Guilty as charged! Damn I didn't even notice that I had done that. I usually try to avoid things like except when it's totally fun to have a fountain spouting of someone's head. It's not so noticeable with the size I have on my blog, but clicking on your download in it's full size it's very clear. Though the glowing crown for the queen of NY State is a nice touch.
